Denver Art Museum's newly renovated Martin Building opens in October
DENVER — The Denver Art Museum’s newly renovated Lanny and Sharon Martin Building—formerly known as the museum’s “North Building”—will open to visitors on October 24, 2021.
Admission for the grand opening will be free to the public. The renovations to the building are nine years in the making.
“The events of the past year have reaffirmed the importance of art as a source of inspiration, healing and hope, and we look forward to showcasing the museum’s global collections through a new lens and providing new spaces for learning and engagement with the reopening of the full campus,” said Christoph Heinrich, the museum’s director.
Originally designed by revered Italian architect Gio Ponti, the newly renovated North Building has been named after DAM Board Chairman Lanny Martin and his wife Sharon Martin. The couple donated $25 million toward the $150 million restoration project.
“This campus transformation ensures that the Denver Art Museum continues to serve as a beacon of creativity for the widest possible audience for decades to come,” Lanny Martin said in a statement.
Also opening in October is the new Sie Welcome Center, which features panoramic glass windows. The welcome center will connect the Hamilton and Martin buildings.
Each of the Martin Building’s seven levels will be home to unique exhibitions. Here is what you can expect in October:
- Level 1: Temporary exhibitions, Jana & Fred Bartlit Learning and Engagement Center, Morgridge Creative Hub
- Level 2: Design Galleries, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native Gallery
