DENVER, CO — Employees, board members, volunteers, and supporters of Rocky Mountain Public Media (RMPM) came together for meaningful impact this giving season through the inaugural Buell Public Media Center Holiday Turkey Drive. Raising close to $1,000 in donations, nearly 50 frozen turkeys, and traditional holiday meal fixings—from cranberry sauce to pumpkin pie—RMPM’s efforts will benefit the Denver Rescue Mission and support families across the Denver Metro area facing homelessness and food insecurity.

According to the
2024 Metro Denver Homeless Initiative Point in Time Survey, 9,997 people were experiencing homelessness, with 71% being sheltered and 29% unsheltered. Close to 90,000 people faced food insecurity in Denver County in 2022, which is “associated with numerous adverse social and health outcomes and is increasingly considered a critical public health issue,” via Feeding America.

"We are meeting people where they are and redefining what it means to serve as a public media organization. By addressing critical issues like food insecurity and homelessness through this drive, although just for a day, RMPM is showing the power of public media to unite people and inspire meaningful action," said Amanda Mountain, CEO of Rocky Mountain Public Media. “
While we know that organizing a food drive for Thanksgiving is merely a drop in the bucket compared to the broader challenges of food insecurity, it is a step toward creating awareness and fostering a culture of care and community action.”

The donations will support the Denver Rescue Mission's annual Turkey Drive, ensuring that thousands of Colorado families can enjoy a warm and hearty holiday meal. As neighbors of the Denver Rescue Mission, RMPM is proud to partner in strengthening our community through collective action and compassion.

“Without the assistance of Denver area organizations and businesses like Rocky Mountain Public Media, we could not do this challenging work. We are looking forward to a continued partnership and we are extremely grateful for their contribution to our Turkey Drive,” said Stephen Hinkel, public relations manager with Denver Rescue Mission.

RMPM extends heartfelt thanks to all employees, board members, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to this effort. For more information on the Denver Rescue Mission Turkey Drive, visit this link:
